FASHOLA - POWER SECTOR CHALLENGES ARE MAN MADE
Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, on Thursday revealed that the challenges plaguing the power sector in the country were not technical but basically man-made as the efforts towards successful stability in the country's power supply has been characterized by many years of broken promises. At a public lecture organized by the Department of Economics of the University of Lagos he pointed out that there was no mystery in achieving stable and reliable electricity supply except that all stakeholders must adhere strictly to the guidelines of the sector's road map. He added that the sector is making progress in power transmission and distribution.

He said, "There are numerous challenges facing the power sector in the country. Most of them are man-made and not technical, including the issue of containers left in the port for about 10 years, explosion of pipelines, badly-installed equipment, cancelled tariff and electricity theft, among others. If men and women created these problems, in my view, only men and women can solve them."The minister also cautioned those clamoring for cancellation of the privatization to desist from such act because the consequences far outweighed their expectations.
According to him, "Nigeria will be seen as an un-serious nation by investors. I fully support privatization of the power sector. The idea was well intended but it was delivered with deception. Many people believe that once privatization is done, power becomes stable, but it was not so as there are many processes involved. Rather than cancel it, we will reengineer it. What we are ,ore concerned about now is incremental power."Fashola went on to reveal the plan of the Federal Government to mete out severe sanctions against perpetual defaulters in the payment of electricity bills.
