GOVERNING INCLUSIVE GREEN ECONOMY IN AFRICA (GIGGA) NETWORK WORKSHOP SERIES WAS HELD IN ABUJA ON THE 27th-28th JULY, 2017.
Different representatives from Africa gathered
at the 2017 Governing Inclusive Green Economy in Africa (GIGGA) to discuss
issues with a focus on Green Economy and Development in Africa.
In attendance were: Dr. Chidi M.Onuoha
President ( Sustainable Energy Practitioners Association of Nigeria
SEPAN) Professor Chuks Okereke ( University of Reading) UK, Dr. Adam
Cooper( University College London) Dr. Henry Fobeyin (Oxford Brookes University
UK) Prince Kennedy.C.Ahanotu Research Officer Green Initiative of
Nigeria(GEIN),Barr. Victoria Nkpoku Legal Officer Green Initiative of Nigeria
(GEIN) Dr. Tony Nyong (African
Development Bank), Dr Peter Tarfa, ( Director Climate Change, Federal Ministry
of Environment), Engr.Sunday Edibo ( Director Land Resources and Rep. of Hon
Minister for Agric),Professor Haruna Ayuba( Director, Academic Planning,
Nasarawa State University Keffi),Dr Innocent Onah (Coordinator Global
Legislators Organization- Office of the Senate President, Nigerian National
Assembly, Dr Eze Onyekwere ( Executive Director center for Soical Justice), Dr
Desta Mebratu ( Former Regional Director, United Nations Environmental
Programme (UNEP), Dr Chipo Mukonza (South Africa), Dr Helen Hoka (Nairobi).
Experts in various fields addressed
participants on Reflections on the Green Economy and Development in
Africa.
One of the Key note Speakers Professor
Chuks Okereke from the University of Reading UK.mentioned four (4) key
Commitment on green growth in our Economy which includes;
- Improvement of well being
- Social Inclusiveness to green growth
- Its Significant reduction on Environmental risk and ecological scarcity and
- Resource efficiency i.e going further on our quest in enhancing green economy in our environment without causing damage.
Professor Chuks Okereke went further to say
that African raising in Economy growth has depended so much on export,coal,diamonds
e.t.c and said that Green growth can help not only globally but all developed
countries in Africa by enhancing livelihood of the people.
Dr. Tony Nyong - one of the presenters from
African Development Bank. In his presentation said that African Development
Bank would render its support in enhancing green growth in Africa by
improving the quality of life of Africans, by reducing the rate of exportation
and transforming Africans through inclusive growth.
Dr. Adam Cooper (University College London) presented
on the Analysis of Published literature on green economy in Africa with a
focus on what we know about governing green growth in Africa with a
mapping on (GIGGA) research having a Country of research as a case
study
Dr. Henry Fobeyin (Oxford Brookes
University UK) presented on the Analysis of technical and capacity gaps for
green economy in Africa. With a review on how to identify technical /capacity
gaps from countries key representatives and a recourse from government reports on
green economy in Africa.
Other presenters concluded their
presentation with an added fact that it is an open opportunity for African
government to tap into some of the funds out there to fund green growth
activities in Africa and it should not be a rivalry between institutions as to
whose interest? That the intentions of green growth is to bring together Academia’s,
Practitioners, and people in the industry to come together to know how to
manage green growth in Africa. Renewable energy was not left out as an
opportunity and the challenges being faced by green growth in our economy
which includes: Absence of or incomplete Strategies and Plans, Weak Human, Technical
and Institutional Capacity to mention but a few.
The workshop was brought to an end with
a vote of thanks by Dr. Chidi M. Onuoha President Sustainable Energy
